Niamey (dpa) - Thirty-six people were killed in Niger when an unidentified plane bombed a funeral in the region of Diffa in the south-east, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

Twenty-four people were injured, Marou Amadou said, announcing three days of mourning starting Thursday. A government source previously had said the number of dead was 37.

Witnesses said the military plane carried the colours of Nigeria, which was thought to have bombed the funeral accidentally when pursuing the Islamist group Boko Haram on Tuesday.

"The plane was neither from Niger nor from Chad," regional official Barmou Hamou Nakata said.

The plane dropped several bombs near a mosque in the village of Abadam.

Amadou said an investigation had been opened to identify the bomber plane.

Boko Haram, which has killed an estimated 13,000 people since 2009 in its fight to establish an Islamist state in Nigeria, has extended its campaign to neighbouring countries.
