WHAT ICC VOWED TO DO ABOUT VIOLENCE IN NORTHEAST NIGERIA


Fatou Bensouda, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) has reacted to the increased violence in the North eastern part of Nigeria.
The prosecutor reacting in a statement issued at the court’s headquarters in The Hague said she would prosecute members of any party responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
ThisDay reports that the prosecutor, while condemning the escalation of horrendous violence in the region revealed that her office is currently carrying out a preliminary examination of some allegations.
She said the allegations were contained in Tuesday’s report by an international media, the Associated Press (AP) that Boko Haram extremists are killing large numbers of civilians, using girls and boys to participate in the conflict and forcing massive number of people from their homes.
Bensouda also warned the Nigerian government to carry out its obligation and prosecute crimes that extremely shock the conscience of humanity, stressing that no one should doubt her resolve, if need be, to prosecute those individuals most responsible for war crimes or crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian military and the Boko Haram terrorist sect are accused of summary executions of hundreds of civilians in the six-year uprising that claimed the lives of no fewer than 10,000 people last year.
