VIOLENT Shakil Ahmad is behind bars after repeatedly abusing his wife during a turbulent 13-year marriage.
The 47-year-old attacked and threatened to kill Athya Parveen following heavy drinking and gambling sessions.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Ms Parveen finally got divorced from her husband earlier this year.
Now Ahmad has been jailed for 12 months and handed a three-year restraining order to stay away from his ex-wife.
The court heard the couple’s marriage hit the rocks just months after they tied the knot in 2001. They have five children between them.
Ahmad’s outbursts typically occurred late at night or in the early hours of the morning when the defendant would return home drunk.
Prosecutor Paul Farrow told the court: “She describes their relationship as not being very good even after three months of marriage.
“The following morning he would be apologetic, but the violence continued and became worse. Furniture was used, and sometimes these occurred in front of their children.”
The court heard the abuse continued even after Ms Parveen met a new partner in Pakistan. Her husband would often turn up drunk at her house in the middle of the night and threaten to kill her.
Mr Farrow added: “She wants to move on with her life.”
The court heard Ahmad had suffered difficulties with his own family due to their disapproval over the breakdown of his marriage. He was also trying to tackle his alcohol problems.
Kevin Mortlock, mitigating, said: “He does not drink on a daily basis, but when he does he does not stop. He is willing to acknowledge the need for change and is willing to accept any help that is offered to him.”
Ahmad, of Newlands Street, Shelton, admitted harassment when he appeared in court.
Judge David Fletcher told Ahmad: “This has never in the eyes of your former wife been a happy marriage.
“It has been punctuated by your drinking alcohol to excess which has led to your bouts of violence.
“Both of you should be able to get on with your own lives.”
The restraining order bars Ahmad from contacting Ms Parveen, including approaching any residence he knows she is living at and from visiting two primary schools in Stoke-on-Trent.
