The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, has said the command arrested no fewer than 17 suspects for alleged electoral offences during the March 28 and April 11 general elections in the state.
He added that the police arrested a suspect with eight stolen explosive detonators, while some others were arrested with locally-made guns.
Ogunjemilusi, who spoke on Thursday through the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Collins Adebayo, also stated that two suspects were caught with ballot boxes and papers in Ofu, while another suspect was arrested in Ankpa for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
He added that 12 hoodlums were arrested in Gegu-beki for post-election violence.
The CP, however, said the elections were generally peaceful in the state. He added that the command adopted proactive security measures to reduce electoral misconducts.
He said, “Though the elections were not without some hitches in a few polling centres, the measures by the police and other security sister agencies brought normalcy to the places.
“Those arrested shall be prosecuted at the conclusion of police investigation. For instance, there is someone arrested with eight stolen explosive detonators by the police on the eve of the election. This is a situation that could have spelt doom for the state, but salvaged by the police.
“There were cases of persons arrested with locally-made guns despite the peace accord signed by party leaders.”
