Rainstorm wreck havoc in Akure, Akoko
Many people were rendered homeless while properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in Akure, the Ondo State capital during a rainstorm that occurred on Tuesday evening.


A similar incident happened in Ikare-Akoko and Arigidi- Akoko in Akoko North East Local Government Area of the state when no fewer than 50 houses in the two communities were destroyed by rain storm which lasted for just an hour.
The rainstorm that started around 6pm in Akure, the state capital removed many roofs in parts of the town while many electric poles were knocked over during the rainstorm leaving major parts of the town without power supply for most parts of Wednesday.
In some parts of the state capital, roofs of some houses were removed and fell on the cars parked outside the house. The erosion that occurred also made some people to abandon their houses in Isinkan, Okeogba and Oke-Ijebu area of the town. However, no life lost during the over one hour rainstorm.
The rain storm in Ikare and Arigidi Akoko according to sources started at 7.00pm on Monday and stopped at 8.00pm rendering many residents of the two communities homeless.
Also, school buildings and commercial centres including shops were affected by the rain storm and the victims of the incident are still counting their losses.
A community leader in Ikare-Akoko, Chief Saliu Okoya, who expressed regret over the incident, urged the state and federal governments to assist the victims of the rain disaster.
He said the community has provided alternative residences to those who had their buildings destroyed to the rainstorm, adding that the assistance of the government will help the victims rebuild the affected buildings.
