The South African consulate in Lagos, Nigeria has shut down following protests against the attacks on African foreign nationals in South Africa, according to reports.

According to the SABC and News24, the protests were held outside the consulate and at the South African High Commission in Abuja on Tuesday.

The South African consul general in Nigeria, Sam Monaisa, reportedly said that the closure would remain in place over the next two days, warning South Africans in Nigeria to be cautious when travelling there.

Monaisa said that Nigerians were using social media to exacerbate the situation in South Africa.

The protests are in response to the attacks on African foreign nationals that have occurred in South Africa over the last two weeks.

A Nigerian official of the newly elected ruling party last week warned the South African government to stop the attacks or risk having South African businesses operating in Nigeria kicked out of the country.
