Mr. Balogun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that adequate investment in water transportation would not only help in reducing the burden on the roads but was also capable of boosting water tourism as well as create more job opportunities.
According to him, the deplorable conditions of many roads in the country have made it difficult for tourists to visit and navigate through the numerous tourist attractions in the nation. He stressed that Government needs to invest more in water transportation, so that boat operators can open up the waterways for boat services.
This will in turn help to promote tourism and commercial activities within the waterways. Mr. Balogun urged the government to support the private sector in improving the tourism sub-sector.by assisting private investors to import modern ships, ferries and boats that will make water transportation easier and safer for users. He added that this was necessary to inspire the confidence of passengers, who hitherto were afraid of water transportation because of the old types of canoes and ferries being used in the waterways.
